Global Health Sciences PhD student Dr. Maricianah Onono has been named a 2016 winner of 120 Under 40: The New Generation of Family Planning Leaders.
Onono is a medical doctor and research scientist with the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and has been a long-time collaborator with the UCSF Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health FACES program. She has nearly 10 years of experience in clinical practice and public health research in the field of reproductive health, focusing on HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections and family planning. She has played a key role in translating many research findings into routine clinical practice. She chaired the scientific committee for the first Integration for Impact conference in 2012 in Kenya, which focused on reproductive health and HIV services in Sub-Saharan Africa.
120 Under 40 recognizes and highlights the achievements of the next generation of family planning leaders worldwide; it is led by the Bill & Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health with support from Bayer. Throughout this multi-year project, 120 young family planning champions will be highlighted, 40 in each of the three project years.
This year’s 40 winners were chosen through public online voting, scoring by a jury of experts and leaders in family planning, and the project secretariat. The winners each receive $1,000 from the Gates Institute to continue their work in family planning.
