Andrea DeLuca

Andrea DeLuca Selected as Deputy Director for IGHS

Dear colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the selection of Andrea DeLuca, MHS, as our new deputy director at the UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences (IGHS).

Andrea brings nearly 20 years of global health experience and a passion for mentorship, research and diversity. She comes to UCSF from Johns Hopkins University, where she has been the project director for the Strengthening, Mobilizing, and Advancing Research for Tuberculosis Elimination Consortium (SMART4TB), which is funded by USAID.

Andrea has led global health teams since 2005 and spent 11 years as a research faculty member at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her research has advanced the science, policies and practices related to infectious disease detection, treatment and prevention, particularly HIV, tuberculosis and pneumonia. She has led research projects and supported in-country study implementation in low- and middle-income countries globally, including India, South Africa, Brazil and Zambia.

Andrea is a strong strategic thinker and operational leader, and I am excited to have her join us here at IGHS. In her new role, she will oversee and lead IGHS’ global operations, help determine Institute priorities, support the growth of funding and impact and solidify partnerships with internal and external stakeholders at UCSF.

I want to thank Kimberly Baltzell, RN, PhD, MS for serving as chair of the search committee, along with Kelly Taylor, PhD, MS, MPH; Elizabeth Fair, PhD, MPH; Michelle Hsiang, MD, MS; Patti Orozco, MPA; and Susie Welty, MPH, for their efforts during our competitive search for a new deputy director.

Please join me in welcoming Andrea to UCSF. She will relocate to the Bay Area with her family and looks forward to meeting you all soon. Her first day at IGHS will be September 3, 2024.

Sincerely,

Payam Nahid, MD, MPH
