Sue Desmond-Hellmann, MD, MPH

Sue Desmond-Hellmann is a physician, scientist, and global health leader with more than 30 years of experience improving health through innovation. She served as CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where she led efforts to reduce inequity, combat infectious disease, and launch the Gates Medical Research Institute. She was the first female chancellor of UC San Francisco (UCSF), overseeing the university and medical center’s strategy and operations. Desmond-Hellmann previously served as president of product development at Genentech, leading the development of breakthrough therapies including Avastin and Herceptin. She serves on the boards of Pfizer, OpenAI, National Resilience, and Stand Up to Cancer and is an advisor to GV, Lazard, and BDT-MSD. She is an adjunct professor at UCSF.
