UCSF Invites Scholars in At-Risk Situations to Apply for Unique Training and Fellowship Opportunities

The UCSF Scholars at Risk Program is issuing a call for scholars in at-risk situations to apply for a limited number of training and fellowship opportunities at University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and in partnership with University of California Berkeley. UCSF is one of the premier health sciences universities in the world, with four professional schools (medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy) and the Institute for Global Health Sciences. UCSF also is collaborating with the University of California Berkeley to offer unique training opportunities.

UCSF Scholars at Risk Training Opportunities

UCSF’s Scholars at Risk Program is offering a limited number of training opportunities for health professionals, students and researchers to apply for one of many programs to advance their careers at a time of risk or grave and catastrophic destruction to their academic and health care institutions (e.g., Iran, Ukraine, Afghanistan and other countries where scholars find themselves in danger). These programs allow for a continuation of training until a safe return is possible. Most non-tuition and salary costs will be covered by the program, such as transport, visas and housing; families are eligible to join). The possible programs are listed below,* including an advanced degree in global health sciences and various PhD and master’s programs. The intention is for scholars to return to their home country upon completion of the training.

*Please check eligibility criteria to ensure that you have all required qualifications (e.g., many programs require completion of an undergraduate degree.)

UCSF Scholars at Risk Fellowships

Unique Fellowships are also possible for scholars at risk with specific credentials.

UCSF is committed to fulfilling its promise towards advancing health worldwide by advocating for a healthy climate for immigrants, protection of human rights, and creating opportunity for scholars at risk.

The Institute for Global Health Sciences (IGHS) has sought to be a pioneer and innovator in academic global health, with a deep commitment to improving the health of marginalized communities. IGHS collaborates with the UCSF Health and Human Rights Initiative (HHRI), which brings together multidisciplinary partners with decades-long expertise in health services for immigrants.

This fellowship is specifically designed to accept skilled clinicians, researchers, and public health practitioners that are currently unable to practice freely. Fellows apply for a one-year fellowship based at UCSF to gain additional skills, contribute to progressing the work of global health and human rights, and contribute to communities in need. The intention is for scholars to return to their home country upon completion of the fellowship.

The goal of the fellowship is to offer opportunities and train future global health and human rights leaders.
