25 Years at the Forefront of Global Health
Since 1999, the Institute for Global Health Sciences (IGHS) has been at the forefront of addressing pressing global health challenges. This timeline highlights key milestones in our 25-year journey of impactful contributions to education, research, and service, ultimately fostering a healthier future worldwide.
1999
The seed for global health sciences is established by UCSF Dean of Medicine Haile T. Debas, MD, and Dean of the UC Berkeley School of Public Health, Edward Penhoet, PhD, with Richard Feachem, KBE, PhD, DSc(Med), appointed as Director. It is the first academic entity anywhere in the nation to have the term “global health” in its title.

2002
Richard Feachem is tapped to run the Global Fund, and George Rutherford, MD is appointed director of the Institute for Global Health. The Institute becomes an organized research unit at UCSF, designed to facilitate interdisciplinary research across campus.

2005
Global Health Sciences officially launches.

2007
The Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) forms out of a meeting hosted by Jaime Sepulveda, MD, DSc, MPH, then at the Gates Foundation. UCSF hosts CUGH until it becomes independent in 2011.

2008
IGHS launches the nation’s first master’s program in Global Health Sciences, developed by John Ziegler, MD, MSc.

2011
Jaime Sepulveda, MD, MPH, MSc, DrSc, is appointed director.

2014
With $100M from Lynne and Marc Benioff and the Gates Foundation, UCSF launches an initiative addressing preterm birth in East Africa and California. IGHS’ Dilys Walker, MD, leads the East Africa arm of the work.

2016
IGHS launches a PhD program in global health under the direction of Elizabeth Fair, PhD.

2016
IGHS’ Malaria Elimination Initiative (MEI) receives a multi-year grant of $33 million from the Gates Foundation to conduct work in Southern Africa, Southeast Asia, and Panama.

2020
IGHS partners with the San Francisco Department of Public Health to create, train, and scale the first contact tracing workforce. The team also partners with the California Department of Public Health to train over 14,000 statewide frontline responders.

2024
IGHS welcomes Payam Nahid, MD, MPH, as its new executive director. Payam also serves as the Director of the Center for TB.
