Early Career Global Health Scientist Award

In 2020, the Institute for Global Health Sciences launched a new Affiliate Awards Program to recognize and celebrate IGHS Affiliates making exceptional contributions to teaching, mentoring, collaboration, or other scholarly work in global health. This award program, along with the Early Career Global Health Scientist Award, recognize outstanding promise to the field of Global Health.

Recipients of these awards will be recognized by IGHS in a ceremony held in conjunction with the IGHS Master’s program graduation.

Eligibility

All IGHS Affiliates with active membership status are eligible for nomination.
(IGHS AP Executive Committee Members are not eligible for nomination)

Nomination & Selection Process

Nominations are open now through June 15, 2023 and must be submitted online. AP members may submit multiple nominations. All eligible nominations will be reviewed and one awardee will be selected by the AP Executive Committee and IGHS Leadership Teams.

2020 recipient of the Early Career Award

Schola Matovu, RN, PhDDr. Schola Matovu is a gerontological nursing researcher, educator, and social scientist, working to advance science and contribute to alleviating social injustices such as poverty, gender, and health inequalities within the global community. Through advocacy, service and empowerment, Dr. Matovu strives to advance the nursing profession and promote health, well-being & quality of life of older adults, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities. Her foundational research explored the experiences and psychosocial well-being of Ugandan grandparent-caregivers for grandchildren affected by HIV/AIDS in Uganda. Her current research is focused on piloting an income-generating project as an intervention that aims to promote economic empowerment and health of Ugandan grandmothers. This research is funded by NIMH and Fogarty International Center through the UC GloCal Health Fellowship. Dr. Matovu is also a co-founder and the Executive Director of Nurse-to-Nurse Global Initiative, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote health and dignity of marginalized patient populations by empowering and advancing the leadership and professional development of the nurses that serve them. Dr. Matovu was also recently admitted into the WomenLift Health Leadership Journey of the Women Leaders in Global Health (WLGH) initiative which is hosted by the Stanford University Center for Innovation in Global Health and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. WLGH's mission is to promote gender equality within global health leadership.  Dr. Matovu recently accepted a tenure-track Assistant Professor position at the University of Utah, College of Nursing.
