Global Health Sciences has developed a range of programs to prepare the next generation of researchers and clinicians for careers in global health. The overall scope of GHS Education and Training reflects the vibrant community of multinational and interdisciplinary scholars working to improve health and reduce disease.
Degree Program
Masters of Science in Global HealthWho: Students and practitioners in global health fields
What: One-year, four-quarter program focused on preparing students and practitioners for leadership careers in global health, health policy, health care, research and development. The curriculum encompasses multidisciplinary health topics, research methods, a fieldwork experience, and seminars on global health practice.
Other Training Programs
Pathway to Discovery in Global HealthWho: UCSF students in the health professions
What: In-depth study and experience in global health to prepare health professionals for global health careers. The program offers courses and training opportunities for students to enhance their understanding of global health problems, concepts and skills for successful careers in global health.
Who: UCSF postgraduates
What: Training track for UCSF residents and graduates from different disciplines (dental, nursing, pharmacy, and medicine) who want to formally incorporate global health into their clinical and research training. The curriculum includes a 3-week classroom course, monthly seminars, and a mentored project in local or global underserved populations.
Who: UCSF students in the health professions and UCB students in public health
What: Training program to promote inter-disciplinary learning among UCSF students in the health professions. The program incorporates multi-disciplinary learning and teamwork. Students enroll in global health lectures and seminars and take part in an international summer experiential learning project involving inter-disciplinary teams.
Who: UCSF and UCB students and trainees
What: Using a multidisciplinary approach, the CHE program trains health care and other professionals to provide leadership as first responders during local and global humanitarian emergencies.
Who: Students from partner institutions in developing countries
What: International Masters and PhD students complete their initial training in their home university attend UCSF for advanced training in global health education and research, and return home to complete a thesis on a topic appropriate to one of their country’s health needs. “Sandwich” students help develop global health science workforces. The final degree is granted by the home university.
The Prevention and Public Health Group (PPHG) offers a number of training courses for scientists involved in public health programs in low- and middle-income countries. These include specialized in-country technical assistance workshops designed to help institutions collect, analyze, synthesize, and present health-related data. The PPHG also offers intensive short courses in clinical research methods and in scientific writing at UCSF; these courses are designed to train a new generation of scientists to respond to the public health needs of their countries through high-quality research, monitoring and evaluation.
